BUS Grant
Value of the BUS Grant?
The scheme offers the following grant amounts to help offset installation costs:
- £7,500 towards the installation of an Air Source Heat Pump.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK government initiative aimed at encouraging homeowners and small businesses to switch from traditional fossil fuel heating systems, like gas or oil boilers, to more sustainable alternatives such as heat pumps. It offers financial support to help cover the upfront costs of installing low-carbon heating systems, making it easier and more affordable to adopt renewable energy solutions.
At Paynes, we are experienced in helping customers navigate the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and ensuring a smooth installation process. Our MCS-certified engineers will assess your home’s needs, recommend the best heat pump solution, and manage the grant application on your behalf. We’re here to make your transition to renewable heating as simple and efficient as possible.
How Does the Application Process Work?
Step 1: Contact Paynes Heating an Accredited Installer: Paynes will assess your property, recommend the best heating system, and handle the application process for you.
Step 2: Paynes Applies for the Grant: Once you agree to the quotation, we will apply for the grant through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme portal. The grant is paid directly to Paynes Heating.
Grant Deducted from Final Bill: The grant amount is deducted from the total cost of the installation, so you only pay the remaining balance. This reduces the upfront expense and makes the transition to a heat pump more affordable.

Heat Pumps – A Renewable Choice
Heat pumps are classified as renewable energy sources because they extract heat from natural resources, such as the air. Even though they use electricity to operate, they can produce up to three times more energy than they consume, making them one of the most efficient and eco-friendly heating solutions available.
Benefits of Choosing a Renewable Heat Pump:
- Lower Carbon Emissions: By using ambient air as a heat source, heat pumps significantly reduce carbon emissions compared to conventional fossil fuel heating.
- Reduced Energy Bills: With high efficiency and low energy consumption, heat pumps can lead to substantial energy savings over time.
- Government Incentives: In the UK, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) provides financial support to homeowners and businesses that choose renewable heating technologies like heat pumps, making them a cost-effective choice in the long term.
At Paynes, we are dedicated to providing eco-friendly heating solutions that benefit both our customers and the planet. Our team is ready to guide you through every step, from choosing the right heat pump system to installation and long-term maintenance.
Check if you're eligible
You’re eligible for a grant if both of the following are true. You must:
- own the property you’re applying for (including if it’s a business, a second home, or a property you rent out to tenants)
- be replacing fossil fuel heating systems - such as oil, gas, electric or LPG (liquefied petroleum gas)
You’re still eligible if you’ve already had funding to make your property more energy efficient, for example by insulating it.
Paynes must commission and install the heat pump within 120 days of applying for the grant or it will not be eligible.
Check if your property is eligible
Your property must have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). An EPC is valid for 10 years.
If you’re not sure whether your property is suitable for a low carbon heating system, speak to Paynes and we can tell you about your options.
Properties that are ineligible for a grant:
Grants cannot be used for:
- Most newly built properties
- Social housing
- Properties that have already received government funding or support for a heat pump or biomass boiler
If you own a newly built property:
New builds still under construction by the developer do not qualify for grants.
However, if you move into a completed new build that has a fossil fuel boiler, you may be eligible for a heat pump grant under this scheme.
If you own a self build property your self build property is eligible if:
- You or the initial owner either built it personally or hired a builder to construct it
- It has never been owned by a business or organization
You will need to provide proof to Paynes that your property is self-built, such as a copy of the title deeds.
